Return of the ugly Populism

The Indian Express has a story , which analyses populist measures taken by Jayalalitha government in Tamilnadu to win back lost votes. Some of these measures include free electricity to farmers, reduction of power tarrifs to domestic users, and a food subsidy scheme. It was sad to see people like Mr. Chandrababu Naidu and Mr. S M Krishna loosing election because they stood firm for the fiscal descipline. Now, it seems like open season for politicians to enact such populist measures. It should be noted that the congress came to power in AP on the plank of giving free electricity to farmers, and they are already implementing this. All these actions would dry state coffers, and sooner or later it is the taxpayer who has to foot all these bills.
